How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Being a Duke history graduate helped me learn how to analyze and synthesize information, read and think critically, communicate effectively about complex issues, write well, and better understand the world in which I live. I have always treasured my history degree and feel that Duke's history department prepared me well for a career that spanned teaching, fundraising, and now philanthropy. My professional life aside, I am also deeply grateful for how my Duke education in history has enriched my life personally."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"I would suggest taking a broad range of courses that span different eras and geographies - particularly in subjects that you know the least about! I would also suggest taking a course that has a heavy writing component so that you have an opportunity to strengthen your writing skills."
