Dan Lerner, B.A. 1992

University of Vermont – Burlington, VT

1992 Major: History

How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"It prepared me for graduate school. I earned a MA and PhD in U.S. History from Michigan State University. More generally, a history degree offers a skill set that is useful no matter what career a person pursues. It taught me to read well (and fast), assemble lots of information from different places, analyze that information, and express the meaning of it clearly and succinctly."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"Seek courses and research experiences that are outside of your primary interest. One never knows what can come of that exploration (usually good things)."
