2017 Major: History

How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"At Duke, I focused my major on the history of social movements and human rights. As a young journalist, I’ve spent much of my early career covering modern social movements, like the climate movement. The material I learned at Duke provided me with a great background for understanding the landscape of the world today and what these movements are trying to accomplish. The many, many hours researching and writing papers was also great prep-work for a career in journalism!"

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"Use your summers and your first few years out of school to experiment and explore. I know the culture at Duke sometimes makes kids feel like they need to rush into their careers, but you have time. You probably became a History major because you’re curious — use that!"
