Stephen Scott, B.A. 1999

Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning: Lower School, The Lamplighter School – Dallas, Texas

1999 Major: History

How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Much of the classwork as a Duke History Major focused on research, analysis, and the ability to put forth an argument supported by facts. Being able to effectively communicate has helped me in my career as an educator. Communication and an ability to put forth a clear and consistent vision is an important part of leadership. I feel my History Major gave me a strong foundation in critical thinking, problem solving, and being a strong communicator. From a personal standpoint, learning about other cultures through my history coursework certainly planted the seeds of cultural competency and would later help inspire me to spend several years working and living abroad. That was a truly life-changing experience."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"It seemed like so many of my classmates had aspirations to go into medicine or law. For those who are looking for a different path, I think the History Program can be invaluable in building a strong tool kit that is versatile and can serve one well in a variety of industries and career paths."
