Colonial Latin America

Course explores cultures of indigenous peoples before the Age of European exploration, and it takes up European conquest and its effects on the Amerindian peoples. Students will study Latin American history from the development of the Spanish and Portuguese Empires to the wars of independence in the 1800s, with special emphasis upon colonial institutions and socioeconomic developments. Not open to students who have taken History 174. One course.
