Capstone Seminar: Heresy and Inquisition in the Middle Ages

HISTORY462S

In this course we follow the rise and repression of alternate forms of belief and worship within medieval Christianity.  Heresy is almost as old as Christianity itself but its forms varied depending on the political and social circumstances of accusers and accused.  A systematic and bureaucratized investigation of heresies known as the Inquistion began in the thirteenth century.  In different ways, heresy and the Inquisition allow us to glimpse the mental and emotional lives of ordinary men and women who would otherwise remain unknown.
