Survey of Mexican history from the pre-colonial era to the present. The course will deal with such issues as indigeneity, empire, revolution, state-building, and violence. Introduces students to pressing questions relating (but not limited to) Mexico's complex racial and ethnic relations, the not always peaceful relationship between the government and the Catholic Church, and the political and social impact of being the closest Latin American country to the U.S.
