The James Willard Hurst Prize is awarded annually for the best work in sociolegal history - broadly defined - published in the previous year. The 2018 winner of the Hurst Prize is Professor Farhad Bishara, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Virginia, for A Sea of Debt: Law and Economic Life in the Western Indian Ocean, 1780-1950 (Cambridge University Press 2017).Bishara received his PhD in History from Duke in 2012.
