PhD candidate Michael Becker receives grant

PhD Candidate Michael Becker has received the American Historical Association's Albert J. Beveridge Grant to conduct research for his dissertation, Towards "The Better Government of Slaves”: Amelioration, Abolition, and Enslaved Jamaicans’ Struggles for Customary Arrangements, 1787-1838. Michael's project explores how enslaved Jamaicans' political strategies to defend, maintain, and expand their limited protections under law and custom were impacted and influenced by metropolitan efforts to reform and abolish slavery. The Beveridge Grant supports Michael’s research at the British National Archives and the British Library in London. Congrats, Michael!
