Theodore Leonhardt, B.A. 2015

Duke University School of Law — Durham, North Carolina

2015 Major: History and Political Science

How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape your professional success?

"Studying history gives students the ability to distill a number of sources into a single, concise body of work and, most importantly, how to write effectively. Those skills helped me in my work in the mergers and acquisitions investment banking groups at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Three Ocean Partners. While those roles may seem more quantitative in nature, senior bankers often struggle to find junior staff members who know how to research and write and, therefore, value their work."

What advice would you give students in History?

"Just because you may not want to become a history or professor or teacher does not mean that the history major is not useful, or that employers will not find your skills valuable. The writing and researching skills that the history major teaches, not to mention the increasingly rare knowledge of the past, are timeless. Moreover, college is the one time in your life when you can devote your time to studying what you please. Enjoy it!"
