Empires of Vision

Duke University Press 2014

In Empires of Vision, just published by Duke University Press, and co-edited by Sumathi Ramaswamy and Martin Jay, we are offered a rich overview of the history of the role of images – paintings, maps, surveys, post-cards, and photographs – and the various ways they shaped colonial and imperial histories. Working between disciplines traditionally associated with visual studies, on the one hand, and the history of empires, on the other, the contributors offer new ways of helping readers understand how empire has shaped perceptions, visuality, and both colonial and post-colonial perspectives.
