Explores the writings of enslaved Africans in America, with a focus on the archives of literacy from West Africa; emphasizes Islamic texts, manuscripts, and traditions brought by enslaved Africans; gives attention to autobiographies, Islamic manuscripts, and slave narratives; course includes a comparative analysis of literacy archives within West African Islamic communities and other traditions, examines similarities, differences, and continuity; engage in intellectual reflection on the intersectionality of West African, Islamic, and enslaved American experiences through the lens of literacy; field visits within North Carolina are anticipated.
