An overview of nineteenth and twentieth century European discourses of Orientalism and Eurocentrism; the evolution of 'Area Studies' models of inquiry and the bifurcations of Asian Studies; the impact of Cold War politics on the development of the field of Asian Studies in the United States; globalization, the environment and East Asia.
