Students explore the topic primarily within the framework of legal history, from the institution of legal judicial torture in the late Middle Ages, through its formal abolition in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, down to its reemergence as an instrument of combat in wars in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
