East Africa and the World

An interconnected history of East Africa and the many places linked to the region by trade, migration, and politics. Using archival, oral, and artistic source materials, considers how East Africans’ lives have been shaped by mobility, from the dhow trade of the Indian Ocean, to the commercial hustle of contemporary Guangzhou and Dubai. Analyzes how ideas about race, class, gender, and sex changed over time in this complex setting. Instructor: Daly
