Bio

Thanh Nguyen is a History major from Hanoi, Vietnam. He is mainly interested in twentieth-century European and American intellectual history, the history of the social sciences, and their entanglements with the history of imperialism and nationalism. At Duke, his study is supported by the Karsh International Scholarship, which has allowed him to pursue further study and research in the UK, Germany, Hungary, and Russia. After graduation, he will join the PhD program in History at Yale University.

Thesis Abstract

This thesis examines the mid-twentieth-century intellectual and political contexts for the work of three prominent theorists of nationalism: Ernest Gellner, Eric Hobsbawm, and Benedict Anderson.
