Bill Sharman specializes in the history of modern Europe, with a focus on Germany, and has also trained in African history. His interests include the histories of colonialism and empire, humanitarianism and human rights, race, the social sciences, and religion.

Currently he is at work on a dissertation called Moral Politics: Humanitarianism and the Third World in West Germany. Research for the project draws on published and archived sources from popular culture, visual and print media, social movements, NGOs, and government agencies to investigate the development of humanitarian ideas and practices in West Germany between the late 1940s and 1980s. 

As a student, Bill has received fellowships and awards from the Fulbright Foundation, the Swiss Fondation Arditi, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). During the 2017-2018 academic year, he is a visiting student at the Friedrich Meinicke Institute at the Freie Universität, Berlin.
