1995 Major: History and Economics

How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"My history major prepared me for a lifetime of researching, writing, and critical thinking. As a senior, I wrote my thesis on the shameful history of the Comfort Women in Japan, explaining how the system was an evolution of what Japanese colonies had done for decades. It was an eye opening project, teaching me how to gather, analyze, and reach conclusions using source materials and other scholarly work. This was excellent preparation for law school and the practice of law."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"Take a variety of classes. I was primarily focused on southern United States history but then took a Japanese history class. I ended up doing my thesis on that subject."
