- Year 1: Departmental fellows work as Graduate Assistants (GAs) for one semester and have no service obligation in the other semester.
- Years 2 and 3: A holder of a departmental fellowship is usually designated as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in an undergrad course or as GA during each semester of these two years.
- Year 4: A holder of a departmental fellowship is usually NOT assigned a work assignment, to allow them to focus on dissertation research.
- Year 5: Departmental fellows will be designated as a TA or Research Tutor (RT) in one undergraduate course during one semester. Upon request of the student, if opportunities are available and if deemed appropriate, students can be offered the opportunity to teach a History class as Graduate Instructor (GI).
- Year 6: Individuals are often given the opportunity to teach a History class as GI, or may be given an additional TA or RT position.
- Year 7 and Beyond: Individuals may be given the opportunity to teach a History class as GI, or given an additional TA or RT assignment, opportunities and funding permitting.
- Note: The official weekly workload for a TA, RT and GI is set at 15 hours and that for a GA at 10 hours.
