Graduate students have the ability to supplement their standard stipend award in different ways: Graduate School fellowships for both incoming and continuing students, Summer Research Fellowships, prizes and merit awards, supplementation of external fellowships, supplemental teaching or research assistantships and other opportunities not related to their program of study. Students enrolled full time cannot perform any supplemental service-based opportunities that would bring their total work hours to more than 19.9 hours per week, including service as TA, RT, GA, or GI. Any additional employment to supplement the standard funding package and required service is also not permissible if it prevents students from actively and productively working toward completion of their degree. Additionally, some fellowships do not permit supplementation or require agency approval. Students must consult with the DGS and their advisor before pursuing supplemental work opportunities.
