How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"It has provided a great degree of insight into human behavior and the political systems that still shape and govern us. History shows us the biggest views and smallest windows into how the human animal has behaved within the different types of societies and scenarios across the currents of economics, geography, technology, religion, and all the -isms. Sadly, many pieces of European and Military history have been crucial to help me understand today's headlines. American history helps me avoid falling prey to false narratives and recycled/rebranded policies floating through society today. The history of colonialism, economic histories, and histories of various peoples and geographic regions all help me understand places I go, people who come here, and the folks I interact with in my profession. To be a good citizen, and to make smart, fair, inclusive, and informed decisions in my professional life (which is very cross-cultural and global), I benefit greatly from all those references."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"Savor the opportunity to learn about as many different places, peoples, times, and types of history now, get the broadest exposure you can, as opportunities to pick up totally new areas usually dwindle as you proceed with further education or a profession."
