2011 Major: History and International Comparative Studies

How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"The biggest thing I LOVED about being a history major was what it taught me about thinking critically and how it taught me to be consistently curious. When it comes to work, you can learn anything you need to at the job but what is really hard to teach is the ability to really LEARN, thinking critically and come up with your own conclusions. The history major honed these skills for me and I feel confident that I can take that anywhere."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"Don't stress so much about what the major will mean in terms of job opportunities. You might stress about what your major means for job opportunities but I feel very confident that once you get in the door at your first job, you will far surpass your peers in non- liberal arts majors 6 months later. It's about learning skills vs. content. The skills you learn in your History major set you up for learning for life. Please know you are well prepared with a Duke liberal arts degree to go after whatever you want to in your career and personal life."
