How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I have gotten to be a historian for my career, so my Duke PhD certainly shaped my career. But I’ve also taught in funny, interdisciplinary programs in which I don’t teach straight history courses. (I’ve never taught the US survey, and I’ve never taught a lecture course.) Duke’s emphasis on and support of interdisciplinarity made me the sort of historian I am. As for shaping me personally, many of my lifetime best friends came from the history program."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"Treat grad school like a job."
