Jill Ewing Flynn, B.A. 1994

University of Delaware

1994 Major: History and English

How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I started out teaching English (my other major) in a private high school, but I also had the opportunity to teach History for several summers in an enrichment program for students of color in New York City. I eventually went on to get a master's and PhD in education, and I currently teach undergraduate students at University of Delaware. My time at Duke certainly prepared me for teaching as well as the rigors of graduate school. I learned how to evaluate text critically, do research, and work with peers and professors."

What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?

"Take advantage of co-curricular opportunities--explore your passions, or discover what they might be! Also, seek out the advice and input of your professors. They are happy to share their experiences!"
