How has being a History graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?
"My history courses at Duke very much shaped the way I look at the world and evaluate arguments, weigh evidence for claims, and so forth. In my own teaching (teaching high school for many years, and then adjunct teaching in state colleges), I have tried to emulate Gerald Wilson, John Herd Thompson, and Claudia Koonz, both in lecturing, in teaching/coaching writing, and guiding research."
What advice would you give students in Duke's History programs?
"Visit professors in their office hours! Take advantage of the gift of time they are offering. I regret not doing more of that myself."
