Gateway Seminar. Germany in the World

HISTORY 139S

Explores the changing place of modern Germany in the world, with a focus on the aspirations, views, and agendas that have driven German engagements with the world in times of peace and war. How was it possible that this nation-state's profound engagement with the world resulted in relentless pursuits of war, empire, and genocide by mid-twentieth century, and how did the post-war Germanies chart new paths since the late 1940s? In answering these questions, the seminar will also provide an introduction into History as a craft and field of knowledge.
