On Monday, September 18, the first Fall 2023 Methods Lab featured a presentation from Dr. Mireya Loza, professor of History and American Studies at Georgetown University, about her work curating exhibits at the National Museum of American History. Discussing her contributions in curating two exhibits, “De Ultima Hora: Latinas Report Breaking News” and “Girlhood (it’s complicated),” Dr. Loza walked the audience through the methodological aims and challenges of presenting public history on sometimes controversial topics. Other areas of discussion included the ways in which public historians are selective in curating their displays, making people who are featured in exhibits feel comfortable, and opportunities for aspiring young public historians to become involved.  This event was moderated by Cecilia Márquez and Jade Marcum from the Duke History Department.

Mireya Loza is Associate Professor in the Department of History and American Studies Program at Georgetown University, and former curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.
