On December 2, the Department of History and the Center for Documentary Studies hosted podcast host and writer Nate DiMeo, who read from his new book “The Memory Palace: True Short Stories of the Past,” to a standing-room-only audience.
For fifteen years, Nate DiMeo's pioneering podcast, The Memory Palace — one of the first podcasts to be preserved by the Library of Congress — has featured stories about forgotten figures and hidden moments from history.
DiMeo’s new book, released by Random House on November 19 and hailed as "ceaselessly entertaining" by Booklist, is based on the podcast and includes new stories, memoirs, found photographs and illustrations, along with some of the most popular stories from the podcast series.
DiMeo’s other work includes reporting for NPR’s “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” and American Public Media's “Marketplace.” He was also a writer for NBC's “Parks and Recreation” and is the co-author of “Pawnee: The Greatest Town in America,” for which he was a finalist for the Thurber Prize in American Humor.
Copies of his DiMeo’s new book were available for purchase on-site at the book tour event, which was free and open to the Duke University community and the general public. Earlier in the day, DiMeo visited two History classes, giving Duke students a chance to learn and ask questions in a smaller group setting.
